The inscription of significant European spa towns in the UNESCO List
In 2006, the Karlovy Vary region arranged for an expert evaluation of the historical centres of the cities of Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Františkovy Lázně with the aim of having them added to the Tentative List of Sites, according to which the Czech Republic will submit nominations of the most significant cultural landmarks in the Czech Republic over the following years for the UNESCO World Heritage List, which took place that same year.
In 2009, the idea of transforming the national nomination into a serial transnational nomination was initiated. In 2010, the National Heritage Institute drafted a comparative analysis of the worldwide spa industry heritage, and identified additional European spa towns for possible nomination for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Czech section included Luhačovice. Nominated candidates in the framework of transnational serial nominations are Cities: Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Františkovy Lázně, Luhačovice, Baden Baden, Bad Kissingen, Wiesbaden, Bad Pyrmont, Bad Homburg, Baden by Vienna, Bad Ischl, Bad Ems, Vichy, Spa, Bath and Montecatini Terme.
At the end of 2013 was made an official structure for the preparation of nomination documentation. International Steering Group led by a representative of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic became the highest authority and other members includes representatives of the national ministries. Subordinated to International Steering Group is the International Working Group led by the Czech coordinator and the members are the national coordinators. The main task is to ensure the processing of the nomination documentation. In 2014 was prepared the Form 2B, so-called Little passport, which was sent to the World Heritage Centre in Paris by each State individually.
In the course of 2015, supporting expert material necessary for the decision on the final composition of the nomination was processed. In April 2016, the session of the International Steering Group in Prague has decided on the final composition of the nomination, which will include 11 spa towns – Bad Ems, Bad Kissingen, Baden-Baden, Baden bei Wien, Bath, Františkovy Lázně, Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Montecatini Terme, Spa and Vichy. Concurrently, the participating State Parties expressed their wish to submit the nomination to the World Heritage Centre in January 2018.
